Kameido Tenjinsha, a Shinto shrine founded in 1661, is buzzing with visitors in spring. Its expansive vines of wisteria (fuji flowers) come to full bloom from late April through the beginning of May at which time the shrine holds the annual Wisteria Festival with food stalls, entertainment and even nighttime illumination. There was a hip-hop concert going on when I visited! The garden views are very scenic with vermilion bridges arching beautifully over the pond that team with turtles and koi, stately shrine and of course the cascades of hanging purple wisteria. The intoxicating sweet aroma lingers in the air attracting hungry bees. The shrine itself is dedicated to the 9th-century scholar and poet Sugawara no Michizane, who is now worshiped as a god of learning. Students frequent the shrine and pray in hope of passing the upcoming exams. I couldn’t get enough photos of these purple blooms hanging from trellises.
